Tram Services

A tram or trolley car is a vehicle that runs on track. The rails are laid on the street and share the road with other road transport. Although trams have disappeared from some places they have recently come back. Trams are a popular mode of public transport which includes all strata of society. The trams move faster than buses and generate less noise pollution.

During the Industrial Revolution of 19th century Europe exported machines by large steamships. Singapore’s place in world trade was established in 1869 with the opening of the Suez Canal.

A dock was built in New Harbor in Singapore and with the advent of steam trams, cargo could be transported between Singapore and New Harbor and the area around the Singapore River.

Many places in Singapore had the approval of the construction of trams. The prospectus of society tram came out on December 8, 1883. With 14 trams laying the first rails on April 7, 1885, the first service started from May 3rd, 1886.The other means of transportation are cheaper than trams. Even the first class price of 10 cents and second-class fares by 6 cents does not attract passengers on board trams. After numerous attempts by the administration of society, the Tanjong Pagar Docks Company purchased all the trams in an auction for $ 186, 000. But the steam trams service ended on 1 June 1894.

Tramways Limited Singapore had its registration under a United Kingdom company based in London in 1901and fixing trams, which were designed to run on electricity, began in 1902. In 1905, a power station was also built by the company in Mackenzie Road to provide electricity for trams. 50 cars were pressed on service from July 24th, 1905, but the rates of the three classes were very high. The popularity of trams has increased with the growing trade in Singapore and lower prices. The company made a profit of about 134 in 1909 but again during 1921, the company made annual losses of about 50, 000 due to necessity of replacing the entire course and generators.

The Shanghai Electric Construction Company supported the tram company with their advice and there was a growth of approximately 235% of the number of passengers because of the correct rates and trams rebuilt. But despite the benefits unexpectedly Commissioners refused to extend the concessions because of their embarrassment to watch on the scope of roads beside the new tram tracks. In 1926, Singapore Electric Tramways Limited had finally been dissolved and replaced by Singapore Traction Company Limited. The trams were gradually replaced by the trolleybus. For those who are interested to try the tram, you could go on the tram buses that travel around Suntec City, Marina Centre, Clarke Quay, Raffles Hotel, Singapore River, the central city and the Orchard Road belt. Tickets can be purchased on the trolley bus itself or hotel concierges. The adults will be charged S $ 9 per day and a child S $ 7.
