Singapore
is an independent state in Malaysia
and has its own constitution on September
16, 1963. However, she was separated
from Malaysia, on August 9, 1965.
The form of government that prevails
in Singapore is a unicameral parliamentary
system. According to the constitutional
amendment adopted on December 22,
1965, Singapore would have a president
elected every four years by the Parliament,
whose role is ceremonial.
However, in 1991, the constitution
was amended again to have a President
elected by the people who would also
enjoy a right of veto in certain areas
of national importance. The government
works on a single level, the national
and local government is the same.
