Sir Stamford Raffles attributed the
region as an enclave of ethnic Muslim
population and has become the focal
point for Arab trade and traditional
Malay culture. Earlier Muslim men
's head (or songkok), the holy Koran
and prayer mats were sold to the Arab
street. The Kampong Glam and Arab
street today are famous for their
textiles.
